8th Grade End of the Year Celebration (Repeat) I am afraid that due to COVID restrictions, we will not be able to have parents at our end of the year celebrations (we will be planning live streams and recordings of events for parents).  However, I am excited to announce that we have been given permission to invite ALL of our 8th grade students back on the last day of school for 8th grade, Wednesday, May 26th from 9am-2:45pm.  Attendance for all 8th graders is NOT mandatory, but all 8th grade students are invited to attend in person on the last day. More details to follow about the specific events for the day, but wanted to be able to get this on all families calendars now.

Last Day of School for Students (Repeat) 8th grade students’ last day, Wednesday, May 26th.  6th & 7th grade last day of school, Thursday, May 27th.

General School Business
Drama Virtual Production Watch Drama Club's Virtual Play BEFORE IT GOES AWAY!  The play, Mirror, Mirror, will be streaming the website until Friday, May 28th.  Don't miss this opportunity to watch the hard work of so many students!

Chromebook Fee for Items NOT Returned Chromebooks that are not returned will be disabled, will no longer be usable until they are returned to the district, and a fine equal to the replacement cost was placed on your student’s account under “textbook fee” earlier this week. The fine for a missing Chromebook is $250. The fine for a missing charger is $35. These fines will be removed when the items are returned during chromebook collection next week.

Congratulations to SH Alumni Graduating (Repeat) We are excited to congratulate the class of 2021 on their accomplishments!

Silver Hills Middle School Summer Construction (Repeat) This summer, Silver Hills will be getting an updated main entrance as well as some updated flooring in the building.  This does mean that the main office will be closed to “walk up traffic” starting June 1st.  Office staff and administration will be in the building two weeks after students leave, but you will need to call or email to make an appointment to come in.  A team member will meet you at an alternative entrance at your scheduled appointment time.

Safety and Security
Parking Lot Safety (Repeat) Please do NOT use your cell phones while driving in our lots---heads up to keep our students safe! Please remind students to ONLY use the crosswalk and to keep their heads up (not on their phones!) when walking through the busy lots.

Please only pick students up from the drop off/pick up lane or in the parking lot.  Do Not stop in the left hand lane to pick up students.  It is dangerous to have them running between cars and it impedes the traffic behind you.

Instruction
Final Grading Marks (Repeat)  We are in the last two weeks of the school year, and we are in the process of completing student’s final grades for the year.  Please take a moment to view your student’s grades in their classes within Infinite Campus with them.  If you have questions or concerns, please contact teachers in the next two weeks to clear up any concerns that you have.

Sources of Strength/Positive Action

(Repeat) The past year has challenged us mentally, physically, and emotionally.  During hard times we must do all that we can to take care of ourselves. Now more than ever, it’s important for us to practice the art of self care. In honor of Mental Health Awareness month we’re sharing the Sources of Strength 8 Protective Factors to help foster a connection both with yourself and others.  The protective factors help build resiliency and foster Hope, Help and Strength by providing support during life’s stressful situations.  Who or what do you turn to for your mental health and Source of Strength?

Counseling Department
May is Mental Health Awareness Month! (Repeat)  Each year, National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day (May 7) seeks to raise awareness about the importance of children’s mental health and show that positive mental health is essential to a child’s healthy development.

"Text, Talk, Act" is an educational service provided by the American Psychological Association in May.  It uses text messaging to deliver content and information to our nation’s youth through their cell phones. Launching on May 7, and continuing throughout the month of May, teens can text APA to 89800 to engage in an activity around mental health.

Teens will learn about how to take care of their mental health, focusing on challenges related to COVID-19, and how to reach out to their parents/guardians to start a conversation around mental health. The text messages include polling questions, discussion questions, videos and social media interactions.

The activity takes 45 minutes and culminates in building the skills needed to hold an effective conversation with their parents on the topic of mental health.
